A lot of people ask me where the LSAL SCORM Best Practices Guide that Nina and I wrote is now.

The guide is available at http://lsal.org/lsal/expertise/projects/developersguide/.

This is the version that includes information on SCORM, Simple Sequencing, and the LSAL Templates.

UPDATED LSAL templates are available at http://www.jointadlcolab.org/research/2005/.

An additional chapter about assessments is also available at http://www.jointadlcolab.org/research/2005/. This Joint ADL Prototype project on assessments includes scripts for making SCORM-conformant assessments; this tool is called SLAG. I hope that this work is picked up and improved on in the upcoming SCORM Forge.

The Reload application that Jennifer Brooks updated for SCORM 2004 is available at http://www.jointadlcolab.org/support/design_and_development/reload/. Be sure to download the updated LSAL templates.

I'm interested in writing open source educational software. I hope I've found the right place to communicate my interests and concerns. I see a great potential for open source educational software if we have an open, flexible standard for righting modules.

I've installed Moodle and have started to put together a web site at
http://metamind.us/moodle for The Education Mall, which has the complete courseware from the Ministry of Education in Ontario Canada. While this
site will be commercial when it is finished, I'm particularly interested in open source standards for both educational software and courseware.

If you can lead me in the right direction or wish to engage in a discussion, I'd be happy to do so.

Thanks,

Steve Moyer

The ADL-Registry Developer's WIKI has information for just about anyone trying to work with the Registry, including:

We're still working on this documentation, and it's a WIKI, so please contribute anything that you want the ADL Community to hear!

Plus key Materials continue to be added to the adlCommunity based upon your interests and feedback.

Some of the new features that you may not have discovered include:

  • Reorganization of the areas (in the Community Sections block on the upper left of each main page)
  • Central shortcut link to all forums for discussion
  • Audio interviews with tools vendors
  • ADL -ilities Score discussion which provides recommendations to evaluate SCORM conformant content. Specially, ADL -ilities Scores provide indices to measure how SCORM conformant courses actually exemplify the ADL Spirit. Xiangen Hu has started discussions on a re-usability index and the relative "size" of SCOs.

PuzzleWe have added a new Game-based Learning section to the adlCommunity based upon user interest and feedback. Check it out and add your questions and suggestions to the discussion.

There is a new overview of the sections available using Articulate Engage.

After two months of input from users, the participants indicate their main interests are nearly half instruction (46.97%), over one quarter technical (28.79%) and the remainder management (24.24%). We intend to continue adding materials in all categories, but will be concentrating on instruction. Please continue to send your feedback and suggestions.

imediaCongratulations to Valerie Hainley, instructional designer at Imedia.it, Inc. for being selected as the winner by the attendees of the eLearning DemoFest in the SCORM category. Over half of the forty-nine entries were SCORM conformant.

“Tactical Questioning” was designed and developed to provide training for U.S. soldiers being deployed to the Middle East. Soldiers have the potential to gather valuable information while on patrol. In order to do this, they need an understanding of the people in the environment, good observational skills, and an understanding of how to ask questions of the individuals they come in contact with. The Tactical Questioning IMI course prepares soldiers to do this. The Army needed a Web-based product that could train from anywhere in the world. The course took approximately twelve months to complete.

I\'m looking for a directory of SCORM-compliant content that has been created over the years since the SCORM initiative began. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

GameOne of the advanced topics of research for learning is that of game-based learning. Games and simulations for learning are of high interest to the ADL Community with efforts taking place to integrate HLA and SCORM.
Recently NATO leaders met at the ADL Co-Lab in Alexandria, VA. "The gathering was part of a serious effort to achieve better interoperability and standards among the alliance’s partners in all aspects of training, including using video games to train troops before they deploy.\"
See the full story here and add your experiences with games and learning to our wiki.
